Meet Amanda

Amanda is a certified ISSA group fitness instructor and Zumba instructor. Having lived in several cities throughout the U.S., Amanda has always enjoyed trying new fitness classes. She has gained a lot of insight and perspective on the physical, emotional, and mental benefits of incorporating fitness into one's life. Over the last several years she has focused her attention on movement as a part of overall health and wellness.

How did you discover your passion for movement?

I grew up training in ballet, pointe, tap, jazz and modern so I have always had a deep passion for dance. It was in my 20s that I really started diving into yoga and other forms of fitness outside of dance (running, kickboxing, indoor cycling, strength training). I believe that variety is the spice of life and so I am always interested in trying new types of fitness classes.

What is the most inspiring thing about teaching students at BYDF?

Making others feel good mentally and physically! There is a proven endorphin rush that comes with moving ones body and I love being able to stoke the fire of that good energy! Seeing people take that positivity and confidence out into the world when the exit the studio doors after taking one of my classes is truly inspiring.

Flashback to your childhood. What do you want to be when you grow up?

An actress!!

How has your personal movement practice helped develop your sense of self and pave the way for self-discovery and healing?

After many years of training, I took a lengthy hiatus from the dance world to let my mind and body heal. I love dance but it was very demanding both physically and mentally. This hiatus gave me the opportunity to explore other types of movement and to really experiment with how things feel versus how things look. It took years of work both inside and outside of a studio setting to reconnect with my body. Learning to listen to my body and respecting what it needs in order to feel good is a practice, not a science. Adopting this mindset has absolutely helped me to find more grace for myself in all areas of life, but especially in my relationship with my body and what it means to be healthy.

What do you want people to know about your teaching style and classes at BYDF?

My classes are a judgment free and supportive environment. I like to think my teaching style is high energy and fiery with clear communication and a lighthearted spirit.

Tell us a little more about yourself or what are you up to when you're not in the studio?

When not in the studio I am busy running a construction company, taking my dog out for adventures in the Berkshires, listening to live music/going to the theater, and spending time with my family and friends.
