Meet Susan

Susan first came to the Berkshires in 2010 to complete her 200hr yoga teacher training at Kripalu. Upon graduating, she began an 8 month residency at Kripalu, which ultimately led to a full-time position coordinating the 200hr Kripalu Yoga Teacher trainings. Over the next 4 years, Susan was fortunate to study with a myriad of teachers spanning many yoga traditions, and graduate from the Kripalu 500hr Yoga Teacher Training.

Now as a mother of two young children, Susan has found her mat to be a place of refuge, and of returning back to herself. Her classes are grounded in foundational knowledge, and infused with breath, movement, and space for exploration. Susan’s intention with each class is to offer a safe space for students to experience a deeper connection with themselves.

How did you discover your passion for movement?

My first formal exposure to movement practice was through dance. I began with ballet, and that grew to include tap, jazz, and pointe. I stopped dancing while in high school, and while that served me at the time, it was also something that I missed.

Once discovering yoga and fitness in my early twenties, it was like coming back to that part of myself. I know now that what felt familiar and resonant for me in these practices was the experience of embodiment.

What is the most inspiring thing about teaching students at BYDF?

I'm most inspired by the relationships within the community and the opportunity to grow and expand my teaching in a nurturing and inclusive environment.

Flashback to your childhood. What do you want to be when you grow up?

How has your personal movement practice helped develop your sense of self and pave the way for self-discovery and healing?

When I am fortunate to experience embodiment, presence, and connection within myself, I remember that this place within me is readily available, no matter my proximity in the world, time of day, or circumstances arising in life. This place of connection to myself (and ultimately something greater) helps to inform how I make decisions in the realm of self-care, and how I relate to others.

What do you want people to know about your teaching style and classes at BYDF?

My teaching style tends to be a mindful, slow flow practice that can range from gentle to strong depending on the level of class.

Tell us a little more about yourself or what are you up to when you're not in the studio?

When I'm not in the studio, I love to hike, cook, and spend time with my family.
